Running a business is a time-consuming endeavor. From inventory checks to employee management, there are plenty of reasons for proprietors to overlook certain tasks. Unfortunately, business owners who do not invest in the safety of their premises may wind up on the wrong end of a lawsuit.
In particular, a slip and fall can cause life-threatening injuries to customers and employees. Traumatic brain injuries and broken bones are common. These can cost tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses.
Three ways business owners can prevent slips and falls:
- Invest in Good Housekeeping
Slips and falls can occur anywhere at any time, as the United States Department of Labor explains. Most of them are avoidable. Good housekeeping can prevent many of these accidents – especially in environments that are prone to wet spots, spills, clutter, ice or other tripping hazards.
Make it a priority to clean regularly. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Mop up spills as they occur;
- Use a broom to sweep debris and clutter from the floor;
- Remove any objects that can cause an obstruction in walkways and other populated areas, such as a loose wire lying in a path;
- And ensure that all carpets, mats and loose rugs lie flat on the ground to prevent people tripping over them. If not, tape them to the floor.
There are seldom accidents in well-lit areas, so be sure to replace any faulty switches or broken light bulbs. That way, people can see where they are going so they can avoid hazards. Always provide sufficient warning of obstacles, wet floors or other tripping dangers.
- Require Employees & Customs to Wear Shoes
Footwear is among the most important considerations when trying to prevent a slip and fall. All business owners should require employees and customers to wear shoes. For workers, you should specify slip-resistant soles.
You should also invest in tiles that are compatible with most shoes. Choose non-slip tiles that have roughened or ridged surfaces. Glossy tiles may look elegant, but they can send your customers to the emergency room.
- Maintain Your Floors
Walking surfaces are prone to wear and tear, even if you purchased roughened tiles. As people walk across them, the roughened surface will wear down and become more slippery.
It is essential that proprietors change their walking surfaces when appropriate. Options include recoating the surface, replacing the floor or using abrasive mats, strips or coatings.
